Is It Legal... to give an exam so completely unrelated to the readings and lecture, that people give up attempting to be coherent? (Or was that due to the fact that I slept for about an hour last night?) for a college department to send out word of a walkout that encourages students to walk out of class during the time that about 85% of their upperlevel seminars take place?
Obviously, I know it's legal to encourage such behavior. But now I have to ask if it's wise. Would any of the professors (two links, one word, oh yeah!) out there in the Blogosphere appreciate it if they suddenly got an email that was also sent to all of the majors and minors in their department asking them to join in a class walkout to oppose the war against Iraq? Now I have to ask myself what I will do. My seminar tomorrow only has 12 other people in it. All of the ones that I actually know are against the war. The professor is also against the war. What happens when they all get up to walk out? Will I cave to peer pressure or stay in class? Should I get up and instead head to the computer lab in the building to check my email and blog? Should I use it as an excuse to go back to bed and sleep? (Ohhh...that option is sounding pretty good...) Should I be forced to justify my views on the approaching war in a class that has nothing to do with public policy, foriegn or domestic? I don't doubt that I will be targeted in class with such questions once the other students and the professor come back.
Also, will they come back? :) Just take a look at the fabulous offerings at tomorrow's protest!
When: Wednesday, November 20; 2:15 pm- 2:35 pm
Where: *edited* A central campus location *end edit*
Why: To protest the US war on Iraq
What: Walk out of class, followed by a rally on *edit* A central campus location *end edit* with Music, posters, armbands, a student Speaker-- to show SOLIDARITY against the war with Iraq
Please come, be heard, and sign a National Referendum for No War with Iraq.
Do you see that? Armbands! Music! A student Speaker! And it's all in the name of SOLIDARITY! How can anyone turn down the opportunity to walk out of class for this?
Would it be mean to name my possibly future kid Solidarity? He would always feel so special in college.
