:: Friday, January 17, 2003 :: Stupid Moment Of The Day So there's this little op-ed on college sports and failing athletes. They use OU as the example, and though I may have an undying love for the Sooners, I do agree that there are just a few problems. In athletics, the University of Oklahoma is a winner. The Sooners' football team won the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day, and its basketball squad made the Final Four last spring. When it comes to academics, though, the university is a longtime loser. From 1998 through 2001, the school's graduation rate was zero for male basketball players who entered as freshmen on sports scholarships. The graduation rate for the football team during the same years was a dismal 26% even though athletes have six years to earn their degrees.Did I say a few? But this takes the cake for the stupid moment of the day.School officials have argued that graduation rates are an unfair yardstick to measure athletes' academic success because colleges have widely varying graduation rates for all students. We just need to find the root cause of this. But athletes often have large aid packages, tutors, special academic centers and easy courses.Screw root causes.
