Good Morning Well, we survived the evening. A gentleman came up and gave me a ticket to last night's banquet for no apparent reason. He was quite sweet, and I got some great food. Anyway, wine, a couple of beers and less than 7 hours sleep from the two evenings before took their toll. Of course that didn't stop me from staying up late enough with the other Bitches and our adopted Bitch (Alum Bitch?) until after 3 AM only to be up at 6:45. Yay.

So there was a panel called "Sex in the City" that was about social issues. I thought it would be amusing to share because half of the students that were clapping were returning from an evening of drunken hookups. Anyway, there was lots of stuff on cloning (calls to ban it completely), biotech (good quotes I'll have to share, but I don't agree with much that he had to say), and then safe sex. The safe sex woman is another alum. She was quite interesting. Very intense, very pro-abstinence.

More later, I need to go talk about guns again.

The V.P. First off, I would like to say I'm having an awesome time at CPAC. Second, I want to share my experience of hearing the Vice-President speak. I was really tired, so I don't remember it all. It was a rather interesting experience, starting with hearing Spooky exclaim "There are men on the roof with guns" as we were waiting for the elevator down to the conference. Well, we got to the room after going through security and there were Secret Service people everywhere (that was damn cool). We had to sit in the back of the room, because there were so many people there already. I have to say that the speaker before Mr. Cheney was more engaging than the V.P. himself. There was a lot of talk about the President's State of the Union address, and it was altogether ok. Like said I was fighting to keep my eyes open.

The one thing that I went to later in the day was more interesting. It was about the missle defense program. I love that kind of stuff. I'll write more when my thoughts are more organized. Maybe after I soak in the hot tub, I'll write something up on my laptop and post it tomorrow.

Arming Pilots I finally got to attend a session here. Unfortunately for me, I forgot that you probably shouldn't attend sessions on issues that you know fairly well. They are geared for the general public. Anyway, I did at least learn of one new group that I may try to learn more about for a possible job. I also noticed that of 5 speakers, 4 were middle aged males. I have nothing against middle aged men. I just would like to see more women involved. I probably noticed that mainly because the person introducing the session was also male, and I happen to know they passed over a woman to do that job. No, I don't want to erase men from the earth. I just think that women have a better chance at convincing those on the fence about the gun issue. We're not typical in the movement, so it at least gets attention.

Anyway, one panelist, Dave Winston, noted that 96% of comments submitted to the DOT during their open comment period on arming pilots were in favor of it. Nice to see that they give a damn about what the public has to say. Tracy Price, another panelist with the Airline Pilot's Security Alliance, noted several instances where our elected officials bitched about pilots and their supporters participating in government. They were upset that people were actually letting the legislators know what they think. I'm starting to think the idea that once you get rid of the Second (Amendment) that the others will start to go is growing more true everyday.

Trying To Get More Well I'm trying to find the others to come and blog about some of the speakers. Unfortunately, I had to miss another panel that I really wanted to catch about grassroots work in the 2002 election. It's something I don't think the Republicans do well. Oh well. Instead, I was being happy and smiling for discussions on women and guns. I love guns, I just wish it weren't such a big thing when women use them. Why should it be? Isn't it inherently sexist when people look at me funny because I'm a female using a gun? Aren't we supposed to be past the age where women are told what they can and can't do because of their gender? And my feet still hurt. Evil high heels.

Blogging On Site At The Conservative Political Action Conference I have nothing to add because I haven't been able to catch any of the speakers so far. I even missed the panel I wanted to see called "2002 & Beyond: Are Liberals an Endangered Species?" I was too busy talking to people because I'm here to work. If you are here, you should come see us. It won't take long to put two and two together once you pass through the exhibit hall. Anyway, I can report some stuff about the VP's speech earlier. Some of the Bitches got in to see it (Preppy, Spooky, and Baby), so they can actually report on content. Apparently there were shooters on the tops of every hotel in this area watching this hotel. Not even the people running the booths near the speaking area were allowed over there while they were doing security. Anyway, it was packed. They shut down entry into the hall more than half an hour before he even started. There was literally no room left.

Did I mention there are some cute guys here? Yeah. I think Baby is in heaven. I even met up with one guy that I met last year. He's just a genuinely nice guy that has earned my respect because he actually seems sincere about his views. He doesn't seem like he's as into the political games. That's the one thing I can't stand about most people at this conference. My feet hurt.

Yep, today was the first day of class. It really wasn't as horiffic as I thought. Actually, I rather enjoyed my classes today (except for my bio class in which the professor didn't speak engish). I'm having quite a delemma though...perhaps you all can help. I am I biology and psychology major, but my passions lie in political science and environmental studies. So, this semester, in addition to the courses required for my major, I will be taking a Civil Liberties (my first poly sci class ever!) and an excessively high environmental studies class. But here's the problem...I should only be taking 4 classes. One of them has to go...and I can't decide which one. Civil Liberties or Ecosystems of the Arctic???

Off To DC As Bitter said, a third of the bitches are headed off to DC for the weekend. First and Classy will be around so I expect them to keep things going for us here. I've sort of allowed myself to fall off the face of the earth, but then I've had so much going on here, that the rest of the world seems a little insignificant at the moment. I'm getting all the kinks worked out of my schedule, and now I think I have direction in my after college plans. The only thing I need tro worry about is getting all the courses that I need for my major, and getting the rest of my "elitist college in the rural Ohio" credits to "elitlist women's college in rural New England". So until all of that is finished, I think I'll keep myself in hiding.

Time Off I don't know how much blogging I'll be doing over the next few days. I will be responding to emails though! I promise! :) First will have to pick up the blogging slack while we're gone. ;) If any of you loyal readers want to point her in the direction of some left leaning blogs, that would be great. Give her something to enjoy while we're gone. First, you can always go check out Ambitionless on our blogroll, I'm sure you'll find some stuff you might like over there. He thinks you have hope, but I'm *evil.* I'm damn proud of that title, so you should go read him girl.

Yeah, so keep our First company, and send her comments or emails or even IMs through her AIM screen name to keep her company in our absence. Classy might need some company, too. She's always out and about, so I'm sure this weekend will hold many adventures for her. Yeah, so good luck girls!

Wanna See The Bitches? We've had varying requests to see the Bitches over the last few months. While our "a day in the life of a Bitch" project isn't done yet, here's just a glimpse of a drunken evening with First, Preppy, Bitter, and Spooky. Unfortunately, when this shot was taken Baby was busy in Mississippi and Classy was off traveling around the world. When we have a Bitchy meeting then we'll make sure and take more. So anyway, here you go.

Barbie & Her Theme Song
The Supreme Court rejected a chance Monday to delve into the world of pop music and pop culture, declining to hear a trademark case involving a song about the perky blonde Barbie doll.
The justices refused to hear a complaint from the maker of the doll, claiming lyrics in a pop song hurt Barbie's image and the marketing of what the company calls "one of the most successful brands in history."
I do have to admit that this could have made one entertaining case. Would the lyrics have been read outloud in court?
Aqua's record company, MCA, says the song and album sold about 1.1 million copies, and it was a top 40 hit in the U.S. and Europe. The group disbanded in August 2001. Lawyers for the label claim the song is a parody protected by Constitution's guarantee of free speech and expression.
But toy company Mattel claimed in court the song lyrics "associate sexual and other unsavory themes with Mattel's Barbie products." Mattel's attorneys claimed children would be confused, believing the song was somehow linked to the actual Barbie doll, which the company says "encourages girls to be anything they want."
Now what could be bad about Ken asking Barbie to go party? I mean what on earth would they worry about with lyrics like "you can brush my hair, undress me everywhere," "make me walk, make me talk / do whatever you please / I can act like a snob, I can beg on my knees" or "you can touch, you can play/if you say I'm always yours?"
Mattel also alleged MCA marketed the song at children.
Yeah, imagine when the first grader I used to babysit wanted me to play that cd for her. I just didn't know what to say. Does she really think it's about dolls and purely innocent? I suddenly couldn't remember how much I really knew in first grade. I was even more scared by the fact that kids seem to know more at a younger age these days.

The important question is, can I get one installed in the trunk of my Sebring? If there's anything more fun than a convertable, it's a convertable with the ability to turn those slowpokes in the fast lane into burning wrecks.
There's more important stuff to read in the post.

Classes In Two Days!! It's hard to believe most of us will be starting classes in two days (some of us have already started). I can't believe that I am nearly three-quarters of the way through college. I'm feeling a bit of pressure from so many things at the moment. I need to decide if I want to go to grad school or find a job, if grad school, which one, if a job, who would want me. I have still have 16 credits from Kenyon to get transfered to "elitist women's college in rural New England", and to do that I need to meet with the heads of two departments here, one of which is a huge bitch (and not the good kind). A little more pressing is the fact that I didn't get a class I need this semester, because the department failed to let it be known that you also needed to sign up for the course through the department as well as pre-register with the registrar. Imagine my surprise, but the professor has been e-mailed and we shall see where that goes. I am scouring the course offerings to see what I could replace it with just in case. Fun stuff.

UPDATE: Got an e-mail back from the professor. He didn't say yes or no, but it's not looking good. So I e-mailed him back, and also contacted the professor of a course the first professor recomended, the only problem is the course I'm trying to get into is only offered every other year and it's one of my 300-levels in my major and the other course is only a 200-level. Grrrr.

Out Of Hibernation & A Game I've been laying low for the past couple of days. I don't even remember the last time I checked email. I've been wrapped up in my own life and just hiding out from the news. I didn't even watch the Super Bowl! (I'm quite happy with the outcome, though!) Anyway, I'll post more later. I need to clean my room. It's a wreck. Then to keep me distracted from that I need to finish up working on the resume (stupid real world) and visit with Baby Bitch more. I missed her so much! When I saw her earlier, I literally dropped all the boxes I was carrying and ran down the hall screaming. We're all screamers here. :)

Because I'm kind of bored and I don't feel like searching for stuff to blog about just yet, I thought I would start a game on here. Ever hear of the game Dirty Minds? Well I have it, and I don't have anyone to play with. So, in my infinite kindness, I'm going to play with anyone on here that wants to join in the game. I give you three clues and you EMAIL me the answers. Don't leave them in the comments, unless you have something witty to share that is not the answer. I will erase answers, or I'll change them to something stupid so you look like an idiot. :) So EMAIL you answers.
I'll give you an easy one to start off with so you'll get the hang of it first. Here are the clues:
*People fight over my bottom.
*I get made in a bedroom.
*You try not to fall off when you're on top.

Hi guys! I'm fresh off a plane and missing Madrid like anything. I'm not saying I'm sorry to be back at my wonderful all women's institution admist the cow pies, rolling hills and -25 weather, but nothing compares to the night life of Madrid! I really need to get a job as a travel editor for Conde Nast instead of struggling as a starving artist (OK, "struggling" as a high class opera student at a premier liberal arts institution, but still...) If any of you need a travelling companion I speak fluent Spanish and I'm learning French and I'm good company too! So, Madrid-Late night all night dancing, Sangria, Granada, Prado, Ex-boyfriends, Chupitas, Tapas, Hot clothes and hotter men, Rastro, Flamenco Tablaos, Dance studios, Metro, Ladronas (grrr) and a thousand other memories I could never explain or share in such a small space. Seriously, I really enjoyed learning how to dance Flamenco in our brief interterm and if you'd want to find out more about interterm (J-term) there's a great article on CNN.

More interesting perhaps is the difference in representation between El Pais (official and most unbiased Madrid newspaper) and The New York Times regarding the War on Iraq. Let's just say the picture was very different from Europe. Anyway, I apologize for not posting regularly but internet in Spain can still be hard to come by and I really prefer to check out Madrid face to face rather than face to computer. Take care...the only reason I'm glad to be back is because of my great friends!!! (Yes, I'm talking about my lovely and decidedly un-bitchy bitches :-) )

Bizarre Who funded this study?
It took four university researchers to figure out what an area trashman has known for years: Divorce can hurt the environment.
Elijah Thorne, founder of Grayhound Trash Removal Inc. of Bladensburg, Md. has seen divorcing couples throw away everything from wedding pictures and dresses to perfectly good furniture and even mattresses.
...
The authors of a study published this month in the journal Nature reached the same conclusion.
"By getting divorced, you could have more impact on the environment," said Jianguo "Jack" Liu, a Michigan State University professor and co-author of the article.
Oh yeah, taxpayers paid for it. Of course! What the hell? These things would be thrown out eventually, anyway. Not that I'm a fan of divorce anything, but still. The argument that people should suffer through a potentially miserable life with each other and put their kids through hell to save the environment is a little strange. I don't want to go into a rant on divorce, I just thought this was a little strange.

More Gun Talk You guys should know that I'm always up for a good gun article. Anyway, I haven't even finished reading this article as I'm writing this. We'll learn together.
Wearing flip-flops to work at Larimer County's food stamp office is prohibited. Bringing a gun to work is allowed.
Commissioners in this northern Colorado county are working to clarify their stance on guns in the workplace with a written policy after two employees were spotted with handguns. There were no injuries in either case.
Why did they put that statement about injuries in there? Did these employees draw their guns?
A representative of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence said a county that allows workers to bring guns to work is unheard of because most prohibit guns in public buildings.
Gee, Brady Bunch gets mentioned in within the first few paragraphs. I hate to tell them that there are people that carry on a regular basis for protection. Many parts of the country don't have their heads as far up their asses as people in DC, where the Brady Campaign is located.
"I don't want to be in a building with a bunch of cowboys," retired Fort Collins high school teacher Fred Schmidt said this week. "Let's take this to its logical conclusion. What if they get into a gun fight? They could cause more damage than good because they're not trained like police officers."
A bunch of cowboys, eh? None of the Bitches have ever been called cowboys before, and we use guns all the time. A couple of us may regularly carry when we "grow up." I guess we'll be part of that mysterious group of lawful handgun owners that the Brady Bunch claims go out on rampages and kills every innocent bystander. I forgot about those crazy lawful handgun owners. Two people on this page's blogroll didn't put out a paper in 1994 that found police have a rate of killing innocent people of about 11% versus the 2% rate of citizens. (Check out Gun Facts.)
Carpenter Ben Stein, 42, of Fort Collins said, "Walking into a public building and knowing that the person you're dealing with is armed, is frightening to me. It doesn't create a pleasant environment."
Unless you pull a gun on them and try to take them hostage or kill them, you'll never know.
Gun-rights issues caught the public's attention in 1999 when newly elected Sheriff Jim Alderden loosened restrictions on issuing concealed weapons permits.
WRONG! Gun-rights issues caught the media's attention. Many of us, this includes those on the other side of the debate, are always paying attention.
The proposed written policy began taking shape last year after a handgun slipped out of a human services employee's holster and clanked down a stairwell. Later, a co-worker opened her purse, exposing another handgun.
So they finally decided to tell us what happened. Face it, if they were legal to have the guns concealed, the only one with a problem is the one who complains.
The human services department then proposed a policy banning guns for workers other than law enforcement personnel. County Manager Frank Lancaster drafted a countywide ban meant to close the loophole.
"We had never thought about it," Lancaster said. "Even though I feel like I kicked over a can of worms, we were going to have to deal with it at some point."
First, I love how beginning a discussion of the issue of personal rights, then finding that not everyone agrees with your terms of the discussion is opening a can of worms. Second, Bitchy Mom works in social services. If they don't have anything to worry about then I'd like to know why her office asked a police officer to come over and spend the day teaching them how to defend themselves.
"To me, that made a second class citizen of employees," Alderden said. "What the county was looking at doing was keeping employees from being able to defend themselves."
Thank you! One pro-gun rights statement in the entire article. Twenty (20!) paragraphs and we got one statement on the side of those that choose to follow the law and protect their right to self defense.

Hey, guess what... There's a poll on the page that asks if you would support the right of people with concealed carry permits (issued after background checks and firearms training) to carry to work in county offices if you lived there. Vote early and vote often.

Baby Names I think these names are just cruel. It's like putting a sign on your child that says "Humiliate Me". If they stay in Utah their whole lives, it probably won't be a problem, but come on.... naming your little girl "Confederate America", "Corvette", "Denverly Dawn", or "Phakelikaydenicia", and a little boy something like "Q", "Slaughter", "Vernal Independence", or "Zippie". I just feel so bad for any person who has to live with one of those names... and I thought being named Russel Nutt (his nickname was Rusty) was bad.

Hmmm
A student group is accusing Duke University of rolling out the red carpet to a "terrorist."
Terrorist is an awfully harsh accusation.
The controversy surrounds a speaking invitation to Laura Whitehorn, who spent 14 years in federal prison for helping to plot a 1983 bomb attack on the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C.
Yup, it's accurate.
Originally, the AAAS Web site promoted Whitehorn as "a revolutionary anti-imperialist who spent over 14 years in federal prison as a political prisoner." After student complaints surfaced, the "political prisoner" reference was dropped and the biography was amended to explain Whitehorn’s prison term was for her role in the Capitol bombing.
How wonderfully polite they were. Wouldn't you agree?
The Capitol Hill bomb, planted in protest of U.S. military intervention on the Caribbean island of Grenada, exploded around 11 p.m. on Nov. 7, 1983. The blast damaged a conference room near the Senate chamber.
But Whitehorn insists she is not a terrorist because no people were injured. The Chronicle quotes Whitehorn as saying, "I’ve never been involved in targeting civilians. [The U.S. Capitol] bombing was a symbolic action. Great care that no one would be hurt was taken, even the janitorial staff."
Again, how polite. It was just one little bomb, no big deal! What's all the outrage about?
Whitehorn’s critics insist, lethal or not, bombs are never acceptable forms of public dissent — something Whitehorn may come to appreciate now that protest is directed against her.
She sure as hell better appreciate it.

Global Observations, Part III If you haven't been keeping up with my global leadership class, then read this first. The U.S. and Russia were discussing the best way to overthrow governments before class even began. Everybody told Italy to shut the hell up when she tried to change the subject. Russia suddenly turned into Iraq. That was strange. Quotes of the evening include: Argentina - "Japan, let me get this straight, you want to go to war just so your ships can leave port?" Japan - "Exactly!"; United Kingdom - "I think that overthrowing a government might be viewed as a threat."; Argentina - "You censor quite a few media images in America." U.S. - "Like what?" Argentina - "Naked people!" U.S. - "How is that news?"; France - "I'd like to know what the U.S. thinks about its brainwashed masses."
The class is now over. You would never believe how happy I am.

The Pill And Taste In Men I ran into a rather amusing conversation about the pill over at Ex Parte. Apparently some study has found that women on the pill tend to prefer more rugged looking men when looking for a partner; whereas women not on the pill prefer the opposite in a partner. I don't know about the other bitches, but I must be an anomaly. I've never taken oral contraceptives and I go for both the more rugged looking guys, and not all that rugged looking guys. I have to say that looking back most of the men I have seriously dated have been more of the rugged type, but I tend to go back and forth. Bottom line for me - I see a great smile, brown eyes, and/or a ball cap and I melt.

I spend so much time in bed under so many covers just trying to get warm. First Bitch has started sleeping in a sleeping bag under blankets and in a hat! We're sooo cold.

Save Us Now
Talk show host Jerry Springer has a secret of his own to share: He's considering running for the U.S. Senate next year.
Springer, a Democrat, said he'll decide by summer whether to challenge George Voinovich, a Republican who has said he'll run for a second term in 2004.
C-SPAN could take on a whole new look. TV ratings may finally be useful. Two words: Ted Kennedy. Gouge your eyes out now.
He acknowledged that his nationally syndicated "Jerry Springer Show" could work against him.
Really? I never would have imagined.
Guests divulge their intimate secrets -- and frequently strip down to their intimate apparel -- on episodes with titles like "Your Lover Is Mine!" and "Explosive Betrayals!"
Hey, those could be debate topics for the Senate. Talk about public access television.
"There are pluses and minuses," Springer said. "The plus is that I'm known by everybody. The minus is that I'm known by everybody."
Again, Really?
Springer figures it would take $20 million to beat Voinovich and as much as $5 million to win a Democratic primary.
"I have the resources," the 59-year-old millionaire said Wednesday night before speaking at the winter meeting of the Ohio Democratic Party Chairs Association.
How lucky we are.
Springer is a former Cincinnati mayor and councilman who lost the Democratic primary for governor in 1982 and considered running for the Senate in 2000. He said he also may run for Cincinnati mayor in 2005 or governor in 2006.
Maybe Ohio residents need to start following the lead of California residents.
"I want to be helpful in rebuilding the party," he said. "Whether I have to be a candidate is a totally separate issue. ... I don't need a job."
Hmmm.

I Don't Know How To React I want to laugh outloud, but I'm not sure why.
The wife of CNN "Moneyline" host Lou Dobbs was arrested Wednesday at an airport security checkpoint after a loaded gun was allegedly found in her handbag.
Debi Dobbs, 49, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and released on her own recognizance after the incident at Newark Liberty International Airport, authorities said.
She did not tell officers why she had the gun, said Allen Morrison, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport.
I just never equate anyone with CNN as being pro-gun, so to find out that they secretly keep them is amusing. I don't know why the hell she wouldn't try to explain something to the officers. Some people are just stupid.

Global Observations This is a follow up to this post. If you haven't already, read it first. Yeah, so this is what happened when we had our first debate. The topic: Human Trafficking. Germany still can't form a complete sentence to save her life. Japan was hungover. The U.S. and Turkey were laughing out loud at secret jokes between them. Russia started bullying Japan into taking on the comfort women issue. Korea just nodded. Canada slipped up and said, "We have an excellent porn industry here in the States!" Don't ask, it got crazy. Tomorrow nights topics include healthcare and mass media.

He is, and I do. Gotta love friends that don't care when you call them while intoxicated late at night. I love the Bitches, too. They obviously deserve a lot after taking care of me last night. First Loses Control Of all the recent babblings, no one has yet convinced me that an attack would not be motivated by "economic interests" or is even modestly justified. There is a reason why most American's do not support war with Iraq (according to a multitude of polls). I mean, let's face it, our government is not known for it's humanitarian bombings. I can just hear it now..."No really, we want to save the people of Iraq from this evil man Saddam. Oops, we killed a few thousand civilians, no worries, we almost caught him that time! Oh, and we have absolutely no interest in oil prospects there"...bullshit. Did anyone read that article I linked to? Explain THAT to me and then we'll talk. Open up your freaking eyes. Where do our interests lie? It’s certainly not in establishing Democracies for the benefit of people living under “oppressive governments”. The only reason we wish to establish a "democracy" is for the purpose of expanding the global economy. A democracy would allow U.S. corporations (who by the way are responsible for our President's ability to run for the seat in the first place) to pay workers in our newly established "democratic countries" $0.05/hour to do the same job a working American would receive $6.50 for in the U.S. Damn that minimum wage, it prevents us from maximizing our profits! There's a reason why GM's profits were at an unexpected high for the year. Pack up Charlie, we're movin’ to Mexico! Some have suggested that Saddam was connected to the events of 9/11, which was quite interesting, but none the less completely false. Don't you think we would have bombed the hell out of Iraq already if the great leaders of our nation could actually prove this connection to the U.N. (it's not like they aren't in support of our little war on terrorism). Hell, we did it to Afghanistan, didn't we? And please, don't even get me started on the education system. If private schools are the way to go, well then I guess the government is willing to fork over $10,000-20,000 big ones every year to every school aged child in the U.S, right? Because that's how much the good private schools coast now a day. But if I do recall, public school that are funded about 1,000 per child do just fine. In Detroit they hardly get $60 per student. Anyone who tells me that money is not the issues has obviously not educated him or herself about the crisis in education today. Hell, why don't we just cut funding to all public schools completely while we are at it? Did I also mention that in a private school, a board of trustees controls what the children learn (their curriculum), not the community or a PTA. I thought we lived in a fucking democracy! I'm not going to have my children brainwashed in a private school where board members are the chairmen of Ford or Dow Chemical. And believe me, I've observed the curriculums that are taught under this type of a system. I think all students have a right to education, not just those who can afford it. I want to have the choice.

I Hope They Find The Bastard Here's more to the heir of Max Factor story. They found the dog last week at his mother's house. This week they found the car. Now they just need to find this asshole and put him away for the rest of his life. I don't mind saying that I hope that it's not a long life.

UPDATE: More finds to this story. Gotta love these defense lawyers. I'd like to believe that they teach ethics in law school. I really would. These guys are making me wonder.
A defense attorney told jurors the fugitive Max Factor cosmetics heir charged with raping women at his beachfront home didn't secretly administer them a date-rape drug, they took it willingly.
...
Luster, 39, wasn't in court to hear the argument. He jumped his $1 million bail on Jan 3 and has been declared a fugitive.
They better get a hell of a lot of money out of this bastard. It won't buy their way out of the special place in Hell reserved for assholes like their client.

I Don't See It I might be missing something, but not even our Women's Center is getting up in arms over the issue right now. This headline on CNN confused me.
Supporters Say Roe v. Wade Facing its Biggest Threat
Suddenly, when I clicked the link, it gave me the following headline.
On 30th Anniversary of Abortion Ruling, Possible Retirement Looms
So the biggest threat is that someone might retire? Not that it's actually being challenged? According to the article, both sides agree that there are no cases on the horizon the challenge it. Getting one's panties in a twist every time something *could* come up will not keep consistent support for the cause. For example, those that may be pro-choice (a term I cannot stand, but I'm not in the mood to think deeply about another), but don't make it their pet issue will soon get tired of the angry feminists calling women to action every 20 minutes when nothing is happening.

UPDATE: Then I just ran across this from Gallup regarding Roe. There's nothing serious to worry about. Read it, it's very interesting.

They Have A Point The people over at The Onion have a point. It's pretty damn funny, and really sort of true. While I think Saddam is a threat that needs to be dealt with, that seems to be the only thing many people can talk about. However, there is a very serious, potentially catastrophic, problem with North Korea right now. Once I have more time to think about the situation and look at the facts surrounding it, I will have more to say on the matter.

Exile or War? That Is The Question War is not the only option we have when it comes to Iraq. There is now talk of support of exiling Hussein and the senior members of his government. However the only way this will work is with Hussein’s cooperation, not likely. I can see where it may seem like a good idea to push for exile, mainly there would be no war, saving many lives, and money. I would love to see the man driven from his country as he has driven so many natives from Iraq, fearing for their lives merely because of the fact that they were educated, or perhaps they were brave enough to speak out against the dictator. My advisor is one of these who fled the country. As an educated man he posed a “threat” to the regime, because as we know most educated people question things. So my advisor came to the U.S. where he could live without persecution.
It wouldn’t be the first time that a leader went into exile; however, it has always come with some form of cooperation from the ousted leader. Sadly I don’t see Saddam bowing out of his own free will. Coming from a man who has lied about the existence of weapons of mass destruction (16 empty warheads and counting), it seems like he would need some “friendly” persuasion to the tune of military action on our part. While I do not like war, it brings out a horrific side of human nature, sometimes it is necessary, and right now it looks like it is necessary. The only way the world will be rid of Saddam is through military action, because he will not leave of his own accord. So, I guess war is the answer, at least from my perspective.

My Neighbor Might Think I'm Crazy She would have to think I'm insane after how hard I laughed at this. Oh, how I understand!
But it's easy to overdo regional bashing. Southerners know this, of course, because we've been on the receiving end for a long time, but that doesn't make it right.
Then again, perhaps the folks in California should take this opportunity to examine how their arrogance may have engendered resentments elsewhere, and to ask themselves "why do they hate us?"
New England is just as bad.

I believe that sometimes war is necessary in certain cases. However, in response to the current situation at hand, I do not believe there is significant evidence that justifies our involvement in a war with Iraq. I refuse to accept the motives the current Republican administration puts forth as a justification for "daddies war." This capitalist, elitist, administration has done everything in it's power to deceive the American Public through campaigns linking Terrorism and Osama Bin Laden to Saddam Hussein. A recent poll showed half the American public actually believes Saddam Hussein was responsible for the September 11th attacks. It sickens me how two completely separate events can be linked at the whim of policy makers who have, oh wait, economic interests in the middle east. After extending my base of knowledge beyond the NY Times, CNN, or Fox News, I can no longer ethically support this war. It has crossed the line between national security into pure capitalist greed. I'm sure there are more threatening situations abroad (not to mention within our very own country) that deserve more attention and cash. Just look at our education system for Christ's sake! It's truly a joke. Fuck this, I'm not paying my taxes this year until the rest of America society (if we can even call it that) wakes up and smells something other than their morning starbucks latte. More on this later when i haven't been drinking...

As Usual, I'm Confused I thought that Chumbawamba broke up. Right now they are playing at the anti-war rally in DC. And can I just say that even I'm shocked by the low turnout? A few people talked about getting rides down there on one of the chat newsgroups on campus. I expected more based on all the coverage by the *evil corporate conservative media.*

I'm going to continue to update as I feel inspired. Check out CSPAN for this fun.

Key phrases from the speeches: framed by the FBI, racism, war against native peoples, military-industrial complex, *repression!*, say no to war (is that like say no to drugs?), for the benefit of a select few, enslavement, in the spirit of Crazy Horse (that's a new one to me), no blood for oil, end the sanctions now, justice and self-determination, *solidarity!* (it took the second speaker to say it, I'm shocked), imperial domination, racist profiling, end the sanctions now, their attempts to silence us, we are a new voice (see my post here baby), his unjust war, we will not fight his war for big oil, and racist arrogance.

Random Thought: Would this be happening if Gore were in office and making the same damn decisions? Ponder.

A girl's name is Peta. So wrong. So many jokes. Oh, did you know that the money going to the military would be going to fund her scholarship to college if we were weren't going to war with Iraq?

How many f*cking issues are we protesting here? There's no unified message anymore. They might actually have more normal people there if they would create one message and quit going off on these damn tangents.

If this is supposed to be the largest rally in the country, some people might be pretty disappointed elsewhere.

Did you know that the war on Iraq won't clean up the environment? Gee, I had no idea. Okay, they are becoming redundant. Although, I am shocked by the consistent references to the Bible and Christianity. It's not bad either. Not even the chants started by the speakers are working with the crowd.

Interesting Observation: Isn't it amazing how many people at this damn rally are holding or wearing things made by the evil corporations? There are some really nice cameras there in the crowd. They aren't in the hands of professional photographers either.

They just announced they are organizing more rallies on February 15. Big fun.

Oh, before I go, my favorite chant just started. 1, 2, 3, 4, we don't want your racist war! How original!! Oh wait, as soon as the speaker stopped yelling, the crowd got quiet.

Finally, new messages. We should impeach George W. Bush. SUVs are *oppressive.* Oops, wait, those aren't new messages.

Ramsey Clark, former attorney general, is claiming that discussion of the use of nuclear weapons is an impeachable offense. I don't think I've ever heard that one before. According to him it is in the Constitution. I have a copy that I keep in my purse, so I'll check it out. I've read it many times before, but I really don't recall the mention of nuclear weapons. Ohhhh...an impeach Bush chant just started, and they promise to start a website in a few days.

I will give them credit for growing. There are more people there than before, though still not as many as I would expect. I guess the college kids had to get over their hangovers this morning. Actually, I like Juan Gato's take on it.

Kick ass. Al Sharpton is up now. Cynthia McKinney now. She's a champion for civil rights. At least, that's what the chant they started to introduce her. I felt like I was watching a high school football pep rally.

They are claiming more than 200,000 in attendance. I can't tell because I'm only listening. It's amazing how many "greetings" we are getting from countries that hate us. There's so much love being spread around.

Whoooaaaa! Mona Lisa is a man. I'm so confused and lost.

Jessica Lange! Public policy guru. How could I forget about her? She's speaking on behalf of all mothers and fathers now. Wow, she's such an inspiration.

So many oppressed college kids. They didn't get one of their permits.

Jesse Jackson. Now we're talking. He loves us! I feel so...violated.

Did you know that reparations is the next battle for ANSWER after they stop the war in Iraq? Well, at least one speaker asked everyone to take that issue up after this one. This is why they are going to alienate people who may not be for war, but don't identify with smelly hippies that take up any cause that's popular. Randomly overheard: Condi Rice is a man?? Oh wait, I forgot that in academics, sex and gender are only social constructs.

Okay there was a break in watching the protest so I could take a phone call. There were some women singing when I turned the television back on. Nothing exciting. I think they've already gone through all their famous speakers. I'm going to take a shower now. Washing my hair will certainly be more entertaining than this.

FINALLY! Mumia was just now mentioned at 1:45 PM EST. Did you know that March 24 - April 4 is Free Mumia Week. (Do they know that it's two weeks??) Perfect. I'll be back to school from break by then.

Why is it that when I head off to the shower, it gets good? Now they are calling on revolution because the capitialist system is keeping everyone down. Technology is evil. Again organizers: You are alienating any *normal* people that might be interested in no war with Iraq.

They ran out of time. Poor them. I'm sure it's somehow the media's fault.

Ummm...Okay
The theory that teenagers are replacing their smoking addiction with a less negative habit--frequent cell phone use--does not seem to be true among teenagers in Finland, according to a report released Thursday.
I can honestly say that I never thought about whether teens in Finland stopped smoking in favor of cell phones. In the spirit of today's protests, I suppose it can all be blamed on the fact that I don't think very globally.
Teens in Finland who report excessive cell phone use may have a lifestyle that includes "risky or health-endangering ways," according to the Finnish researcher.
What's the definition of risky? I'm just curious. I'll probably be an "excessive cell phone" user because I just got an upgrade to unlimited nights and weekends. Hehehe.
Extreme cell phone use may indicate rebellion among teens whose interests appear to be directed more toward leisure and "street culture" than their schooling, she explained. (Emphasis added.)
I wonder how much money they wasted to come to that conclusion.

Stupid Moment Of The Day So there's this little op-ed on college sports and failing athletes. They use OU as the example, and though I may have an undying love for the Sooners, I do agree that there are just a few problems.
In athletics, the University of Oklahoma is a winner. The Sooners' football team won the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day, and its basketball squad made the Final Four last spring. When it comes to academics, though, the university is a longtime loser. From 1998 through 2001, the school's graduation rate was zero for male basketball players who entered as freshmen on sports scholarships. The graduation rate for the football team during the same years was a dismal 26% even though athletes have six years to earn their degrees.
Did I say a few? But this takes the cake for the stupid moment of the day.
School officials have argued that graduation rates are an unfair yardstick to measure athletes' academic success because colleges have widely varying graduation rates for all students.
We just need to find the root cause of this.
But athletes often have large aid packages, tutors, special academic centers and easy courses.
Screw root causes.

Exactly
The largest crowds are expected in the nation's capital, where President Bush and many in Congress are united on the move toward war and protest leaders hope they can draw tens of thousands, at least, to march in dissent.
White House press secretary Ari Fleischer said Bush will be at his Camp David presidential retreat over the weekend, but has no problem with the protests.
"The president welcomes the fact that we are a democracy and that people in the United States, unlike Iraq, are free" to protest, he said.
My focus in my major used to be social movements. It still is somewhat, but now I've moved to the mass media studies a little more. I always approach readings and papers with the role that mass media has in the development of social movements. In fact, my favorite parts of the articles on protests are the quotes from the protesters. Unfortunately, very few realize the freedom they have to do something like this is not common in the world. I think, based on the few books I've read that talk to real people involved in marches and movements, that people, especially ones my age, take these rights for granted. Maybe it's because we've grown up in a time when these kinds of events could be brought into every home through television. It doesn't seem that strange anymore. I definitely have respect for many leaders of movements in the `60's, even if I don't agree with them. It was groundbreaking because for the first time in history, protesters were not only standing up to those they were there to protest, but to the world. It takes guts take a stand where everyone can see you. Now we have so many images that the coverage of these protesters doesn't mean as much. They aren't lasting impressions anymore. Of course, I would argue that this is why they feel they are being silenced. It's not that they are, it's that they don't have anything to new to say or show the world.

Not Good I can't imagine being her family right now.
Police searching for a missing Modesto, California, woman told the woman's family that her husband was having an affair and had taken out a $250,000 life insurance policy on her, sources close to the family confirmed to CNN.
Laci Peterson, 27, was eight-months pregnant when she disappeared on December 24. The baby was due on February 10.
Modesto police showed family members a picture of her husband, Scott Peterson, with another woman with whom he was allegedly having the affair, the sources said. The photo was dated in mid-December, at a time when family members said Laci Peterson thought he was on a business trip.
Family spokeswoman Kim Peterson (no relation) told CNN the family would have no comment on the report, but said that family members did not recognize the woman in the photographs.
This seems kind of odd. If this leads where one would assume, I'm just a little curious about how stupid this guy is. Haven't we learned anything from movies? Don't buy an insurance policy on your spouse right before you try to kill them. It's too obvious.

Sex!
The Vatican wants to prevent cultural manipulation of the family in no uncertain terms.
Terms, in fact, are at the very heart of it.
The Holy See will soon publish a new glossary of 90 words related to sexual and family issues, according to Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo, director of the Pontifical Council for the Family.
The "Lexicon of the Family and Life" will also clarify the Catholic Church's teachings on birth control, sex education, assisted procreation and homosexuality. The work intends to clarify "neologisms, ambiguous terms and difficult concepts in frequent use."
Those terms include "voluntary interruption of pregnancy," "reproductive health," "matrimonial indissolubility," "sexual education" and "conjugal love." When bandied about in a global forum, they can cause "grave moral confusion," the lexicon states.
The work has a waiting audience.
"It's long overdue, but it's a welcome initiative to clarify the political hijacking of the language," said William Donohue, president of the New York-based Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights.
Hey, it may be an entertaining read.

Well, At Least He Was Honest... Anyone who has read this blog for more than a week knows that I'm not a fan of New England people. Here's one reason why:
Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts holds hatred for having to travel through heartland spots like Iowa to raise cash, it can be revealed.
On the eve of a fundraising trip to Dubuque, Iowa -- quotes surface which detail Kerry's feelings about trips to Dubuque.
'I hate it. I detest it," Kerry told a Boston reporter in 1996.
Typical big city asshole. I would say that I don't mean any offense to some readers, but it's amazing how many people that live on the coasts that do not even have the foggiest idea what the hell is in the middle. The school I attend doesn't admit that many idiots, but my first year I was actually asked by an American student where Oklahoma was located. She just couldn't remember which one that was. I would say that these kinds of statements would alienate me even if I did vote for Dems on a regular basis.
"I am sorry he hates coming here and taking our money!" Dubuque resident Marsha Vittal said in anger on Friday. "He wants to be my president, but he detests, detests coming to where I've chosen to live my life, to ask for support?!"
Exactly. As much as I've learned that I could never live somewhere like New York, I fully respect that some people love life there. I expect the same respect if I choose to live in the middle of f*cking nowhere. I sure as hell expect that kind of respect from someone that wants to run my life.
A Kerry staffer explained the senator holds no personal dislike of Dubuque or its residents.
"He's actually very excited to be making the trip this weekend," said the insider.
Of course not.

What The Hell Are We Supposed To Do? I really would like to know the answer to that. If the anti-war protestors could tell me that then maybe I would be more likely to give them some creedence. But given the fact that the U.S. is letting the UN do their thing, and look what's going on with that, why shouldn't we use military action to take out a dictator that poses a threat to the stability of an entire region (producing weapons of mass destruction is posing a threat if I'm not mistaken)? If we sat back and didn't do anything then the U.S. would be critized for doing nothing to help the plight of the Iraqi people, and since we are doing something to help those people end the rule of a brutal dictator the U.S. gets slammed anyways.

Georgia, Gettin' With The Times
The Georgia Supreme Court has struck down a 170-year-old law that made it a crime for unmarried people to have sex.
How kind of you to let me do what the hell I want with another person that consents. Thank you for giving me my damn rights back. I know, they probably never *really* charged people with it unless someone made a fuss, but I would still like to see laws like this removed from the books out of principle.
The ruling Monday came in the case of a 16-year-old boy discovered having sex with his girlfriend in the bedroom of her home. The young woman's mother made the discovery.
Oh look, there's someone that made a fuss.
"Our opinion simply affirms that ... the government may not reach into the bedroom of a private residence and criminalize the private, noncommercial, consensual sexual acts of two persons legally capable of consenting to those acts," Chief Justice Norman Fletcher wrote.
Under Georgia law, the age of consent is 16.
Crazy idea!! The government can't criminalize consenting behavior? Wow, we're on track to the end of the world now.
Following his conviction, Jesse McClure, now 17, was ordered to pay a fine and write an essay explaining why he should not have had sex. He wrote that it wasn't the court's business.
"Invading personal privacy just isn't right," McClure said Monday. "It now goes that way for everybody."
In 1998, the state Supreme Court overturned an anti-sodomy law, ruling it violated the Georgia Constitution's guarantee of a right to privacy.
Why he shouldn't have sex? Who the hell made him do that? It's disturbing that a 16 year old had more of a clue on basic rights than the prosecuter that actually took him to court.

I'd Like To Believe I'm Partly Responsible You can see why I think (and hope) that I'm to blame.
Some of these change week to week, but here are the Top 10 things that annoy me right now (in relative order of annoyance):
1. music media conglomerates
2. Miami (the city, school, and related sports teams--college and professional)
3. pharmaceutical companies and their lobbyists
4. Tallahassee weather from mid-May through August
5. people who use the term "liberal" as an accusation
6. hardcore gun-rights' advocates
7. smoking
8. Fox News
9. aggressive drivers
10. telemarketers and spammers
I won't say I hate these things. Well, maybe when it's around 100 degrees outside, and I'm reading some ultra-right-wing diatribe about guns and "those damn liberals." Then I'll hate. A lot.
Well number 6 and 9 (hehe) apply to me. I swear I didn't do that on purpose. I also kind of hope that we fall into the "ultra-right-wing" category. Funny since one Bitch is a Democrat (Classy, that's right, isn't it?) and one is a Green. A third isn't terribly political, and the other three are conservatives of varying degrees.

World Observations Before I get into real news, I just thought I would share my experiences in this evening's class on foreign policy. Like I said before, it's like the UN, only with notably fewer rules and far more hormones and PMS. Anyway, I'm Canada and I kissed ass to the US tonight, but then called her an idiot. The US and Russia came together to crush all dissent and silence other countries. Then South Africa literally stood on her chair and told Russia to kiss her ass, that she wasn't afraid of the US and her bombs. Italy was suffering from penis envy based on the size of her nameplate to everyone else's. Japan said that her country is like water and everyone else is oiiiiillllll. Germany couldn't form a single sentence. France went on and on about how supportive they've been of the US and how much sympathy they've had since 9-11. Canada laughed. I don't think I was supposed to. Oops. The Netherlands complained about how her welfare state was creating a class that refuses to work because of the benefits given to them by the government. Damn, what a crazy idea. Now to ask, how much rope does one need to hang oneself? I have to sit through 6 more hours of this.

Contrary To The Rumors No one has kidnapped me. I promise to resume posting tonight. Until then, I've actually been doing some work for classes (I know, Hell has frozen over) and other stuff. Anyway, I haven't really had a good excuse, but I should have some entertaining stuff to report. The other class that just started Tuesday night is almost like a MUN thing, only with far fewer rules and more PMS. I represent Canada. You better believe there will be some Canadian jokes cracked (by me!) and any time the situation looks bad, I'll blame the US but hide behind her when it is convenient. Maybe I'll even call her a moron for good measure.

Quickie UPDATE: Hehehe, I already found some ammo. :) I don't intend to take this course terribly serious, just in case you can't tell. Foriegn policy doesn't turn me on. (Now domestic policy, oh baby...yeah...) Plus, there's already been two catfights and we've only met once without actually starting debate.

UPDATE II: Damn, Juan Gato can just provide me with all my Canada material.

The Rape Issue I just saw this on Fox. It's a very strange decision, but I've decided that Califonia is full of crazy people anyway. While the discussion of the court decision should be read in the article, I did like this bit that talked about rape and its evolution quite a bit.
No one wants to return to the '70s when women who took rape cases to trial were emotionally shredded in cross-examinations. None of us long for the days when the reports of a raped woman were summarily dismissed by a cynical police department. But the recent California decision is not a remedy for such problems surrounding the issue of rape.
Sixties feminism deserves a lot of credit for bringing sanity to bear on the crime of rape. They broke down a mythology that claimed only "bad" girls who walked alone at night in tight clothing were raped. Research showed exactly the opposite to be true. Every woman was vulnerable to attack, even in her own home and especially from men she knew.
Sixties feminism attacked a court system that believed rape complainants were less reliable than other victims. Feminists attacked the "reasonable resistance" requirement imposed by most states; that is, rape was not deemed to have occurred unless the woman had manifested strenuous resistance. Meanwhile, other crimes did not require a victim to resist in order for a crime to have occurred.
The prosecution of rape used to be skewed against women. Now it seems to be skewed against men. No longer is criminal intent necessary for criminal guilt. No longer is an explicit "no" necessary for the withdrawal of consent.
I also thought that this paragraph was interesting to note.
Brown -- the dissenting judge -- continued, "and even if we conclude persistence should be criminalized in this situation, should the penalty be the same as for forcible rape?" In essence, Brown is asking whether consensual sex that becomes nonconsensual at some point should be treated in the same manner as a back alley rape committed at the point of a knife. Or should there be another category of rape, such as negligence, which carries a lesser penalty?
I'm sure there are many arguments against such laws, and I'd love to hear them. But, I can also think of instances where they would be appropriate that I don't feel the need to get into.

Absence, Canada, and KMart I know I haven't been posting as much the last two days, and I apologize. I've had a pretty welcome set of distractions that includes one kickass class. I just went to another class where I have to represent Canada in debates on global issues that include human rights, multinational corporations, and mass media concerns. I think I'm just going to crack jokes about Canada, call Bush an idiot, and then hide behind the U.S. when things get tough. The Canada jokes are required because everyone has to make fun of it here. (That's what an ex from Wisconsin told me anyway.)

Now, KMart, get your act together. All the news stories about your problems keep stating the problem that you don't seem to get over and over.
Kmart filed for Chapter 11 protection from its creditors a year ago after failing to compete with Wal-Mart's low prices and Target's hipper merchandise.
Very simple, in a capitalist society one must offer either products that people want or products at such low prices that people don't even care if they want them, they just buy them because they are a good deal. Get with the program. Besides, you pissed off a hell of a lot of people with your decision to hire Rosie and then remove ammo from your shelves. I'm not saying the gun owners caused your problem, but they sure as hell didn't help solve it.

Another Correct Me If I'm Wrong Thought Hit & Run has a post on the notable lack of attention for the formal Lieberman announcement today.
Paula Zahn is doing a segment on child care. Yahoo News puts it toward the bottom of its daily stories. The Senator's own website doesn't even announce it. Dick Gephardt was supposed to have set a new standard in "quiet" presidential candidacy announcements, but Vinegar Joe seems to be outdoing the rest of the pack in this particular stoneface contest.
This is just being picky, but can his website make such announcements? I mean that is his Senate webspace, not an area to discuss a White House run that has nothing to do with his job as Senator, unless he steps down. I'm assuming he won't be stepping down since he continued to run for the seat even while running for VP. Anyway, it was just a thought. Maybe he is free to use the space, but I'd like to pretend that those in government have some sense of what is appropriate use of resources.

Women's Rights In Saudi Arabia Apparently the Saudis want us to think they actually grant rights to their women. I guess my favorite part of the article is where they try to compare the compulsory wearing of abyas to the habits nuns wear.
"It is clear that religious codes of dress for nuns who cover from head to foot is respected in the West while the abaya worn by Muslim women is regarded as oppressive," she said.

I guess the fact that it's a personal choice to become a nun and adhere to the strictures of that lifestyle makes no difference. Not to mention many nuns don't even wear the habits anymore.
She added that the Western media should deal with the problems of women’s rights in their own culture before criticizing others.

What? You mean I have to worry about being beat just for accidentally exposing the bare flesh of my arm? Women's rights in Western culture are far more advanced than anywhere else in my opinion.

Stupid Constitution, It Keeps Getting In The Way Of Soccer Moms You'd think they would only have a problem with that pesky Second Amendment. Now they point out how silly the whole concept of individual freedom is. When will we learn?
Then someone noticed that the parent chaperone with the luxuriant hair and restrained makeup was a dad.
Most of the kids on the trip, apparently, either did not notice or did not care that a classmate's father was dressed as a woman, in jeans, a sweater and nice shoes. Most of the teachers, apparently, were equally untroubled.
But when the fourth-graders returned from Jefferson City, Mo., that afternoon in mid-October, the parent chaperone who had spotted the cross-dresser alerted some friends. Word spread quickly though the Francis Howell School District, in the middle-class suburb of St. Charles. The resulting tumult has not subsided.
Alarmed, outraged and indignant, several parents demanded that the school board look into the matter. They found a receptive audience in board member Lisa Naeger, a mother of two who recoiled at the thought of her 9-year-old being exposed to a transgender adult on a field trip.
...
Naeger has proposed a policy that would require parent chaperones to wear ''gender-appropriate'' clothing for school functions. It's unlikely, however, that such wording would survive a court challenge. In 1985, a federal court struck down an obscure (and rarely used) St. Louis ordinance that banned anyone from dressing in clothing ''not according to his or her sex'' while in public.
Naeger expects the board to make a decision by mid-January; she is not optimistic that her colleagues will back her request. But a handful of fired-up parents is not willing to let the matter drop.
The parents have asked the district to let them know whenever the father in question visits Castlio Elementary School, so they can withdraw their children from class. And they are pleading for a dress code that would require all adults who interact with students to ''dress in what a 9- or 10-year-old perceives as normal clothes for a man or a woman,'' as mother Patti Hight puts it.

Hell Has Frozen Over I almost fell on the floor when I read this article.
A former congressman facing more than six years in prison for fraud is pledging that he will try to pay back the millions of dollars he swindled from friends, relatives and business partners.
"It's a difficult sentence in some ways, and it will be painful, but I caused pain for others and I have to accept the responsibility and be accountable," Edward Mezvinsky said Friday, a day after being sentenced.
The pessimist in me says that he probably only said that because he's terribly sorry that he got caught, not for doing what he did. However, the optimist that I am most of the time wants to believe him just a little bit. I'd like to pretend there's good in the world.

Reality Bites For These People Look like a fool, and sue the people that actually aired it after you signed a release. Isn't that what everyone does these days?
But some people like Stillman and Wendy Linden, who appeared on the MTV daredevil show Jackass, may beg to differ.
Linden, who participated in a stunt, sued the music network for negligence, battery and intentional emotional distress, claiming she was injured and humiliated during filming.
The suit claims that Linden suffered spine and knee injuries as a result of an incident on the show and that taping continued while she waited backstage for an ambulance. Linden is seeking unspecified damages.
You participated in a show called Jackass. What the hell did you expect?? Oh, but wait, we can't actually expect people to take responsibility for their actions.
Contestants regularly sign a waiver before being on a show, but some say people don't always understand the implications of what they are signing.
"People who are involved in reality programs, while they do sign releases, they believe in their hearts truly, that's it's going to be a fun experience, they're going to win something from it and it's going to be safe," Sandra Baron, executive director of the Media Law Resource Center, told Fox News.
Literacy. It's a good thing. When the paper says they ain't gonna take responsibility, they ain't gonna make you the exception to the rule. (That was almost painful to type.)
